- High-quality
audio - The new Windows
Media Format codec is an advanced audio codec that streams 44.1 kilohertz
(KHz) sampled stereo audio at 20 kilobits per second (Kbps) providing
the widest frequency response available. At 20 Kbps, the Windows Media
Format's quality is roughly equivalent to G2 audio at 40 Kbps, and its
files are half the size of MP3.
- High-quality
video - Windows Media
Technologies use Microsoft's highly optimized, third-generation, standards-compliant
MPEG-4 video codec which delivers superior picture quality at all bandwidths.
Windows Media Technologies deliver higher frame rates than RealSystem
G2 (which uses proprietary audio and video codecs) at all bandwidth
points, thereby delivering a superior video experience. The MPEG-4 V3
codec has been optimized for the Intel Pentium III instruction set.
- Intelligent
Streaming - Intelligent
Streaming is a set of features in Windows Media Technologies that automatically
detects network conditions and adjusts a video stream's properties to
maximize quality. It includes a video de-blocking filter that improves
the quality of low-bandwidth images, and multi-bit-rate encoding which
allows up to six video bandwidths in a single file.
- Fully scalable
view window - Users
can resize the video window to any size they choose for optimal placement
and enjoyment. The RealSystem G2 player only supports three preset sizes.
- Open and
extensible architecture
- Using the open architecture of the DirectShow API, the Windows Media
Player can be extended easily to support any arbitrary data type. Third
parties can develop filters and plug-ins to build custom applications
or to extend the functionality of the Windows Media Player. The Windows
Media Player supports the broadest set of content formats, including
popular formats such as ASF and QuickTime that the current RealSystem
G2 player does not.
